Your application

Before you start

Before you start

There are certain things you can do as a candidate to prepare for applying for a role with us.

Find connections between the Job and You

We want you to focus on jobs that interest you and equally that you match. We recommend thinking about your background/ experiences and the Job Profile (this is the job description and person specification) to help draw lines between the two – where do they connect?

Remember: When you find a job you'd like to apply for, don't start filling in the application form straight away. Take some time to prepare, as this will make the task much easier.

Writing your application

We want you to tell us why you think you are the ideal candidate for the role with reference to specific and relevant knowledge, skills and experience in the Job Profile:

  • Gather together all the information that you'll need, including details of your academic achievements, employment history and any registrations you may need to make note of in the application.
  • You'll make a great first impression if you do your research - find out about Camden Council and what we stand for, our vision and our goals. Read our Camden 2025 Plan.
  • If have limited work experience or experience in the UK (for e.g. you’re a recent graduate, have relocated or are returning to employment) – include school related projects and personal experiences that demonstrate relevant skills and knowledge.
  • Read the instructions carefully to ensure that you complete the correct sections of the form and know when the deadline is.

Putting together your application

Applying online

It’s always best to type your supporting statement into Word first. It’s easier to edit and you can copy and paste into the relevant section later.

  • Align your knowledge, skills and experience with the Job Profile
  • It is important to give clear examples that demonstrate how you meet the criteria – be specific about projects you have worked on or cases you have successfully dealt with.
  • Your examples should give a brief description or the situation and task, however, focus on the actions you took and the result of your actions.
  • Keep it relevant. This means putting the most emphasis on skills and experience that are specifically relevant to the job. Anything in your application that does not respond to the requirements listed in the Job Profile could be left out or mentioned briefly.

Example

  • Situation:
The paper process for DBS (police) checks for all new recruits working in safeguarding roles is causing delays for services and is time consuming. I was faced with the task of improving the council’s safeguarding procedures.
  • Action:
I developed a new digital vetting process, this included building an online tool for the council procedures using a verified system within the space of three months.
  • Result:
As a result of moving the process online, I improved the DBS checks turnover – I achieved over 90% of checks being completed within a week. This meant that we could get new recruits on board more quickly for our services. The impact of my actions was that I saved the council £5000 per month as well as time by shifting the manual process online.
