Nana's Story

I was really drawn to the council because of its reputation, as well as the equal focus on technology and people. There’s a real interest in transformation and making sure everyone benefits. There’s also a culture of being leading edge, and you get a lot of support to achieve that. People self-manage and are empowered to deliver. It has staying power. A lot of people are here for a long time. Camden makes you feel at home.

I love leading. I manage around 30 people. Making sure our colleagues have the capabilities to do their job effectively is one of my greatest challenges. But it’s one that I enjoy. It’s rewarding to see people get more out of the IT they use. And now, we’re able to do even more with less, because of all of the efficiencies we’re bringing in.

We’re getting Camden people up-and-running with technology, and giving them access to even newer devices. This allows them work remotely and spend more time with their families, which is brilliant. And, we’re impacting on the lives of residents. Now, you don’t have to call up and wait for someone to deal with your issue. You can access services online, whenever you want. It’s revolutionising the way we work.

We’re giving social workers the tools to intervene and report incidents earlier. We’re transforming libraries into digital areas where kids can learn how to code or watch movies. So, they aren’t joining gangs – they’re spending time doing what they enjoy. We’re reducing crime and loneliness. Coming into work knowing that we’ve made something better is so rewarding.

When I decided to do a Masters in Management, Camden gave me flexibility to work, manage and study all at the same time. Now, I’m returning that commitment as a mentor, helping people within Camden move up. I always wanted to use everything I have to help others, like me. Camden is helping me do that.

Camden is a melting pot. It welcomes your ideas, the way you look and dress, and what you’re into. You’re not limited by where you’re from. It feels like the sky’s the limit. At every level, people are open to listening. We’re located next to Google and the open plan offices mean the Chief Executive could be sat three desks away from you. You can quite easily go over and have a conversation. It creates a sense that we’re all in this together and everyone’s more approachable.

When people talk about rebellion, I see Camden. The rebellious spirit, to me, is having the freedom to be yourself. It allows you to do the things that you really want to do, and you wouldn’t normally do. My advice to anyone looking to join us? Take the lead. It’s a place that treats people the way they want to be treated. We want you to succeed.
