Request to view building control documents

You can request to view building control certificate documents. These include: 

  • drawings 
  • structural calculations 

These documents are not public records. If you are the owner, you do not need to gain consent. If you are not the owner, you will need written consent from the current owner. 

We will keep records for 15 years after they are submitted. At this point, we will securely dispose of the physical file and keep only some information. This may include application details but not drawings, plans or calculations.  

Documents for older applications after 1992 

If you need information about older building works, you can search for building control applications.  

Information on our database includes: 

  • a description of the works 
  • when the application was validated 
  • when works started 
  • when works were completed 
  • the name and contact information of an approved inspector 

Request documents 

If you find a full plans application record on our database and need to view its drawings or structural calculations, you should: 

Make a payment of £142.80 per file you are requesting. You can make a payment online: 

  • select ‘Building Control’ from the list of payment types  
  • select 'miscellaneous payment without VAT’ 
  • enter your 'Application number' which you will receive after you apply, for example '23/2/01000' 
  • for the account name, enter ‘BC’ 

Send an email to [email protected] to confirm your payment.  

In some cases, the information that you are looking for is not in the file. In this instance, we will not refund your payment. 

What happens next 

We will retrieve the files and arrange a virtual meeting with you. This is usually for 30 minutes.   

If the works were completed before 1992 

Our records for building control applications were digitised in 1992. You can make a request for a search to take place for documents from before this time. 

Email [email protected] and include: 

  • the property address in the subject line 
  • an estimated date for the works carried out 
  • the work description 

When we receive your email, we search for the information. If we find it, we will email you including a request for payment of £142.80. This is to view: 

  • drawings 
  • structural calculations 

We do not know what is in the file and you may not find what you are expecting
