Parking bay suspensions

On this page:

What is a parking bay suspension

A parking suspension is where the parking controls, waiting, parking and loading, are suspended and the space is reserved for a particular purpose. You can book a suspension as a resident or a business.

Parking suspensions are indicated on streets by yellow warning signs. Refer to these signs for the exact location of the parking suspension and up-to-date information.

What can suspensions be booked for

A single space, whole bay or group of bays may be suspended. You can suspend parking spaces for:

  • removals
  • utilities work (gas, water or electricity)
  • construction
  • skip
  • filming
  • highway improvements
  • local events

A space cannot be suspended for preferential or convenience parking. A trade permit is available for trades parking.

What you will need

  • the street name or postcode of where the spaces are
  • the date and times you want to suspend the space for
  • a full and clear description of where the spaces are located, for example, ‘outside number 20 only’. Your text description will appear on the sign so do not enter personal information, abbreviations or the post code
  • vehicle registration numbers of all the vehicles using the spaces
  • a debit or credit card

If you’re going to place a skip on parking spaces, you will need to apply for a skip licence with a parking suspension. More information and details on how to apply can be found on our skip licence page.

Costs

As a resident or a business you will need to pay:

  • 1 day - £71.14 per space per day charge
  • 2 - 5 days - £78.27 per space per day charge
  • 6 - 10 days - £85.37 per space per day charge
  • 11 - 14 days - £92.50 per space per day charge
  • 15 - 42 days - £106.74 per space per day charge
  • 43 - 183 days - £135.20 per space per day charge

You can only suspend parking spaces on a street for up to 6 months. If you need to book for longer, you will need to apply for a temporary traffic order.

There is an administration charge of £59.55 for each suspension created on our system.

There is a short notice charge of £312.48

If you're moving home

If you’re moving home you do not have to pay the suspension space charge for the first day only (up to 3 consecutive spaces) and the short notice charge does not apply. The administration charge will still apply. There is an exemption when a vehicle is continuously engaged in a property move, but arranging a suspension makes it more likely spaces will be free. A trade permit may also meet your needs.

Book a suspension

To book your parking bay suspension log in or create an account

Bookings should be made at least 17 days in advance of the start date of the suspension. While we cannot guarantee a space, this will allow for a warning period meaning it is more likely to be available.

If you’re booking later than 17 days before the suspension starts, you may incur a short notice charge. The minimum period that you can book a suspension is 3 days before a suspension starts.

You can book a suspension as a resident or as a business.

Amend a suspension

If you’ve booked a suspension, you can make changes up to 4 days before the suspension starts for:

  • dates and times
  • number of spaces
  • suspension reason
  • location text description

You can make changes to a customer reference and vehicle registration fields at any time.

If you add spaces which are not next to your booked spaces or within a different bay this will be classed as a new suspension.

To amend a suspension login to your account and search for the suspension you want to change. You can search using your suspension reference number or select "current and future suspensions" from the main suspension page. Click on the pencil icon to amend.

We cannot guarantee that all suspensions will be included in our search facility. Suspensions booked at short notice may not appear on the email list of planned suspensions.

It remains the driver’s responsibility to ensure they check on-street signage for upcoming suspensions and to ensure that where they are parked, a suspension is not currently in operation.
