NHS Health Check

As one gets older, the chance of developing serious health conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease and kidney disease can increase. Even without a family history of these diseases, it is likely to develop, but going to a health check-up for early signs means you can get help and prevent it from getting worse. A health check-up will also tell you if you don’t have any of these conditions and what you need to do to keep your risk low.

NHS Health check is a “free” check-up for people who are 40 years up until 74 years old. These checks are useful to identify early signs of heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease and stroke.  When these diseases are detected early, you can get support to prevent it from getting worse.

Where can I get an NHS Health Check

All GP practices in Camden offer NHS Health Check. If you are 40 to 74 years old, haven’t had a health check in 5 years and don’t have any of the above conditions, you should have been invited by your GP to attend an NHS Health Check appointment.

If you fit these criteria but have not been invited, contact your GP surgery and ask for an appointment.

What happens at an NHS Health Check

During your health check appointment, your GP or nurse will check your blood pressure, do a blood test and ask you some questions about your lifestyle and health. With the results from this check, they will discuss how to reduce your risk and help you make a personalised plan to stay healthy. They will support you with future appointments for follow-up where needed, and with referral for community support. It should take 30 minutes, and you can ask any question that helps you feel supported. If you don’t speak English, or if you use British Sign Language, you can request for an interpreter at your appointment for free.

Other health check-ups

Besides the NHS Health Check, there are other important health screenings available to help you stay on top of your well-being.
