If you’re getting behind or can't afford payments on energy bills, credit cards, loans or other debt, help is available. Seek support as soon as you can because the sooner you reach out, the sooner you can get help. You should also work out which of your debts are priority debts and deal with them first – an advice organisation can help you with this.
Debt advice and support
- Get in touch with an organisation like National Debtline for free and confidential advice
- Contact a local organisation in the Camden Advice Network
- If you’re in an emergency financial situation and don’t have the money to pay for essentials, register for our free Money Advice Service. We’ll help you access all the payments you’re eligible for.

If you're behind on council tax payments

If you're behind on council rent
- If you're a Camden Council tenant and you can't afford to pay your rent contact our rent service or speak to your Neighbourhood Housing Officer.
If you're behind on energy bill payments
- Energy suppliers might be able to let you pay in smaller amounts or take a break from payments. You might also be able to apply for a grant to pay off energy debts.
- Ask your energy supplier for temporary credit if you cannot top up a pre-payment meter.
Check if you can increase your income or save money
- Check you're receiving all the benefits you're entitled to by using our Better Off Calculator
- Check you are being paid the National Minimum Wage
- Check if you’re eligible and apply for Council Tax Support for a reduction in council tax
- If you live alone, apply for a ‘single person’ 25% discount on your council tax
- Check you’re on the lowest tariff for all your bills. Ask your current provider for a better deal or shop around
- If you receive benefits, you may be eligible for a reduced-price ‘social tariff’ on your broadband or mobile phone. Speak to your current provider about a cheaper rate or visit ofcom.org.uk/cheap-broadband
- Find out if you're eligible for funds, grants or loans.
Loan sharks
