Diversity in the Public Realm

In 2023, Camden Council’s Cabinet agreed a five year Strategy for Diversity in the Public Realm. As Camden aims to go further to represent, empower and celebrate its diverse communities in its public spaces.

Camden’s Strategy for Diversity in the Public Realm aligns with the missions of the Mayor of London’s Commission for Diversity in the Public Realm and builds upon it. It also builds upon the equalities and disproportionality work the Council has delivered across the areas of education, health, adult social care, the voluntary and community sector, housing, and workforce.

The Strategy for Diversity in the Public Realm has been developed by Council officers, Councillors, residents, and stakeholders, using the following inclusive principles:

  • co-design and engagement with our communities
  • cross-collaboration with multiple council teams to embed diversity and create opportunities
  • partnership working with external organisations to harness expertise, support, and share
  • encouraging a wide, diverse, and inclusive audience and participation in all aspects of the public realm

The Strategy for Diversity in the Public Realm sets out a comprehensive action plan to increase equality, diversity, and representation in the public realm in Camden. The public realm includes parks and open spaces, arts and culture, high streets, the Community Investment Programme (our ambitious plan to invest in schools, homes, and community facilities in Camden), the Community Investment Levy (a charge on new developments, which funds facilities such as roads and transport, education, medical, sport and recreation facilities and open spaces), planning, libraries, commemorations, place naming, and history and archives.
