Alan's Story

I’ve got connections with Camden going right back to when I was born.

I've been here for fifteen years. But now is an interesting moment. There is optimism and positivity. A sense of being rebellious. It comes from a feeling you can change things. You can make a difference. And people at every level are making an impact.

We’re here to help people when they’re going through a stressful time.

Camden is one of the most mixed areas of London. You have Highgate, Hampstead, Bloomsbury and Primrose Hill, with some of the wealthiest individuals in the country. At the same time, you have areas that are home to some of the poorest people.

As the system changes and Universal Credit comes in, there is a greater need for us to support our community. Often, you’re dealing with vulnerable members of the community, as well as policy areas and large amounts of money. That makes it more interesting than you might think.
I like being hands on, so I'm in the right place.

There are some very difficult challenges ahead, but Camden tends to be an upbeat place. People appreciate what we do. And my colleagues are very passionate about providing a high level of service.

Our Chief Executive and Leader of the Council are relatively new and very keen on involving everyone in shaping policy. In fact, we’re known for getting involved in central government, and we’re always being asked for our views by civil servants in Whitehall.

I don't think you could ever wish to work in a nicer environment.

You've got parks and the West End on your doorstep and a major transport hub, with St. Pancras, Euston and Kings Cross. That makes it very easy to get to from the whole of the Southeast.

Flexible working has changed things completely.

You can start early or finish late. Now I work from home some of the time, and finish in time to do a bit of gardening. The way we work helps keep people at Camden. It’s something you won't find in other places.

I've worked in other councils where there's a high turnover. But at Camden, you tend to find more people who've worked here for 30 years or so. And, a lot of younger people are arriving now. Camden has a much better reputation than other major local authorities, as well as being a very good place to live. People feel lucky to be here.
